Napa Valley Grapegrowers Historic Accomplishments
NVG was a major contributor in the Federal Hearings in 1976, which set the rules for American Viticultural Area designation and increased the varietal intensity and Appellation content in wine from 51% to 75%: thus setting the base for the current prominence of California premium wines
NVG established the Bottle Price Formula in 1977, which tied the price of grapes to the value of wine and forever set Napa grapes as a premium specialty item and not a fungible agricultural commodity
NVG participated importantly in the California Legislative Hearings in 1978, which passed the "Berryhill Bill" and established the CDFA Annual Crush Report which vastly improved the information transfer in California viticulture
NVG established continuing dialogue with Napa County and State of California government leaders, thus assuring the Napa growers of a voice in matters that affect them
NVG encouraged and promoted the first Napa County Hillside Ordinance to better protect Napa's sensitive sloped lands
NVG formulated the policy and led the fight to establish Napa County’s Winery Definition Ordinance in 1989 thus establishing the 75% rule for Napa winery grape purchases and importantly protecting the Napa image and sense of place from serious degradation
NVG generally and importantly improved the economic, political and social standing of grapegrowers in Napa County and throughout California
